Why I love my job…

November 24, 2009

One of my favourite moments in my job is presenting my clients with their finished wedding album and having the priviledge of sharing that moment with them.  Although the images have often been viewed many many times up to that moment it’s amazing what an impact the finished article has – seeing images professionally printed and pulled together in page layouts that really tell the story of the day.

So it was fantastic to catch up with Alison & Rob at the weekend who’s wedding I photographed in Harrogate at the Sun Pavilions in July.  They had chosen a beautiful leather album handcrafted in England (I don’t believe in shipping in albums from the other side of the world when we have lovely options on home soil) with simple black pages and black matts featuring a white key line to outline each image – it looked lovely and really complemented  the style of their wedding.

Since coming to pick the album up from the studio Alison has been back in touch with a lovely message – “I just wanted to say thank you so much for our gorgeous album. It’s even better than I had hoped. You were a real star all the way through the process and I’ll be recommending you to everyone I know!”

I attended a really thought provoking debate at Leeds University last Friday titled ‘Countdown to Copenhagen’   The panel included Franny Armstrong – director of The Age of Stupid, Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP – Secretary of State for DEFRA, Ashok Sinha – Director of the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, Edward McMillan Scott MEP – Vice-President of the European Parliament and Rt Hon John Prescott MP.  I came away empowered with new knowledge but also with a sense of frustration and fear at how many barriers seem to be in the way of effective action.

There are just 19 days left until the climate talks open in Copenhagen and it is now formally recognised by the G8 countries that if we exceed 2 degrees global warming we will have triggered runaway climate change leading to devastation worldwide.  The media and doubters have been playing the usual pessimist cards but there’s still hope that an agreement can be reached.  Yesterday, America & China started to make positive noises about achieving agreement at the talks so it’s more important that ever that we send strong messages of support to the world leaders that failure to agree is not an option.

If like me, you’d like to take some active steps towards tackling climate change issues here are a few things you might like to consider:

  • Come and join THE WAVE – 5th December in London – march on Westminster to send a strong message to the world leaders in Copenhagen that an ambitious, fair and binding agreement is needed urgently.
  • Sign up to Ed Milliband’s campaign for a fair and binding deal in Copenhagen
  • Sign up to the 10:10 campaign and pledge to cut your personal carbon footprint by 10% in 2010
  • If you haven’t already seen it buy or rent Franny Armstrong’s film – The Age of StupidWatch Film Trailer
  • Visit the Friend of the Earth’s informative website to find out more about climate change issues and how you can make a difference.  A key campaign for me is Fix The Food Chain Campaign.

I’m always so envious of all those lucky photographers in California who seem to have the most stunning backdrops to work with – lovely beaches with never ending blue skies.  So to prove we’re just as lucky here in freezing cold Yorkshire I’m sharing a few of my favourite images from a pre-wedding shoot I did last weekend for Charlotte & Nick at Cayton Bay near Scarborough.  We timed it perfectly just as the sun was going down and were rewarded with some gorgeous dusky light.   It was fantastic to spend some time with Charlotte & Nick as well as Charlotte’s parents and can’t wait for their wedding late December at Middlethorpe Hall in York.  It was an absolute pleasure to also meet Alfie the dog who took a rather starring role in the shoot due to his amazing jumping skills!

The following collection of wedding photographs are from stage 2 of Julia & Mike’s wedding.  I was really honoured to take part in their civil ceremony at Leeds Town Hall back in July and with just 4 guests was delighted to act as an official witness for them as well as take photographs.  They then created a beautiful and personal ceremony at a private garden in Leeds in September where they shared vows and aspirations with their family and friends.  After enjoying the stunning gardens everyone then traveled over to Fulneck Golf Club to enjoy a really fab party including a hog roast and barn dance.  Julia & Mike brought lots of eco touches to their day including hand carved wooden rings created in England, locally produced food and a charity focused gift list.

Oh So Pretty……part 2

I was really chuffed to receive a copy of Lohas Magazine from China this morning which features some of my wedding photographs!  Lizzie & Matt got married in Hull earlier this year and bought lots of eco touches to their lovely day.  A big thank you to London journalist Olivia Hegarty who wrote the feature on green weddings and of course Lizzie & Matt for their kind permission to showcase some of their images.
