Urban wedding portrait shoot

January 30, 2010

Nina Hunter of Love Life Design & her hubby Simon who owns the very cool Remedy Hairdressing Salon in Leeds tied the knot last year but were really keen to go for a post wedding photography shoot as they felt their day hadn’t given them the time and scope to capture some edgier portraits of the two of them.  The rain kindly stayed away and despite the cold Nina bravely wore her lovely wedding dress and amazing shoes with Simon donning his very cool tailored suit.  As their ceremony had been at Leeds Civic Hall we based ourselves around Millennium Square and the glamorous back streets in the vicinity!  They were both absolute stars and I love the really cool urban edge to the images.  I’ve processed the images in my digital darkroom to give them a more vintage vibe…

I’m not a big fan of the concept of “Trash the Dress” as with my eco-friendly hat on I believe a wedding dress is for life not just a wedding shoot – but the idea of a “Love the Dress” approach is a great one.   Some couples can feel that their wedding day just goes far too quickly and love the chance to wear their fab wedding outfits again.  For others it might be that they want to try something a little bit braver or modern.  Or sadly, for some couples they just weren’t happy with the images created on their wedding day or on a more positive note they might have got married abroad but want somthing on home turf that celebrates their marriage.  It doesn’t just have to be about edgy urban backdrops – it’s about finding a location that says something about you as a couple.  I’d love to have a chat if you’re interested in a post wedding shoot – do visit my website for more info about me and my approach to weddings.

I was really lucky to have the opportunity to attend a brilliant talk by one of my favourite documentary photographers, Martin Parr, in Leeds on Thursday.  The event was hosted by Creative Networks which aims to support collaboration between Yorkshire artists and creative industries.  Just in case you haven’t come across Parr’s work before do visit his website for more information and to view his portfolios.  Parr is famous for his frank portrayal of the mundane with a focus on social issues and consumerism.  His images can be both humorous and uncomfortable at the same time as they give his subjects no room to hide.

Perfect white wedding….

January 27, 2010

My 2010 wedding schedule was kicked off in style with Hannah & David’s lovely wedding near Huddersfield on the 16th January.  The whole day was jam packed with smiles and love and I was in photography heaven with the snow and lighting in the church…  Apologies for the chunkier than normal portfolio of images but I really struggled editing down my favourites!  Congratulations again to you both!

Wellies and fun at Kirkstall

January 22, 2010

Following up from a previous newborn session I had a great time hanging out with best friends Sam & Evi and their families at Kirkstall Abbey.  Luckily the wellies were on as Sam managed to find the one puddle in the park!  We also took a bit of time out to enjoy some chilled out colouring in the visitor’s centre…

I absolutely love family lifestyle shoots and working with little people is one of my all time favourite things!  You can view lots more porfolio images of some of my work with children HERE…

Middlethorpe Hall in York is just the most perfect winter wedding venue and although we didn’t get to take advantage of the beautiful grounds due to the continuous downpour, the interior lent itself brilliantly to the glamorous vibe of the day.  Charlotte & Nick were married at St. Andrew’s Church in Bishopthorpe finishing with a fantastic guard of honour.  They then returned to Middlethorpe for a mulled wine reception.  The evening commenced with a Black Tie champagne reception, with family and guests donning some very gorgeous outfits – not to mention the very dapper mess uniforms!  Charlotte & Nick brought tons of personal touches to their day taking a peacock blue theme throughout and presenting guests with homemade gift cards at the tables.  Oh – and did I mention the dress – a totally gorgeous bespoke number by Anita Masserella.  Congratulations to you both x

Winter Wonderland…

January 7, 2010

Although I’m meant to be head down in accounts spreadsheets, I just had to get outside this morning to enjoy what has to be the most stunning day for ages – in Leeds we’re enjoying crystal blue skies and crisp white snow everywhere…  I know people are finding loads to grumble about with the snow but personally… I’m loving it!  I love the fact that I’m walking everywhere (and so are most other people so there are hardly any cars on the road!) and there’s just a lovely feeling of peace and quiet.  I love the feeling of stomping through the deep snow in my wellies and not being able to see my feet!

One of my resolutions for 2010 is to make more time for personal photographic projects so I enjoyed a fantastic photography session exploring local landmarks within 1/2 mile of my front door.  I had the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey all to myself and loved it!!  Hope you enjoy the images and they serve to remind why winter is fab!!

I’ve just launched my latest showreel on my website featuring some of my favourite wedding moments from 2009.  It was so so hard to edit them down but I got there in the end.  Hope you enjoy them and a huge thank you to all the clients who make an appearance!  It’s been such a fantastic year and going over the images has bought back so many fab memories…

Really excited now to get back into shooting mode – first wedding of the year is 16th January so not too long to wait…

Happy New Year!

January 4, 2010

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!  Hope everyone had lots of fun over the Christmas holidays…  I saw in the New Year with friends and family in a remote scout house near Whitby – freezing cold but lots of fun!

I’m nearly back in full work mode – I was all geared to head off to the studio this morning but can’t get my car out of our street due to the ice – the joys of cobbles!  Luckily I’d bought my MAC home for the holidays so have set up a temporary home office until I can escape!  My cat Tina Sparkles is trying her best to be a helpful office assistant but keeps sitting right in front of my screen!

January is always a really exciting month for me as there are always tons of new wedding enquiries following Christmas engagements and I use it as a business review period – there’s tons on the “to do” list including website updates – so watch this space for new portfolio shots and a new 2009 wedding showreel featuring some of my favourite moments from the year…

Here’s to a fantastic 2010 !!
