Bishy Road – Summer party and Dog Show

I adore living just off Bishy Road in York.  It’s officially Bishopthorpe Road but now fondly known as Bishy Road.  It has won the coveted Great British High Street of the year award in 2015 and has also been nicknamed the Notting Hill of the North.  Underneath all of these accolades though is a ridiculously friendly community and a great set of independent shops and cafes.  Bishy Road is also renowned for putting on a good party and this Summer was no exception.  The traders association led by Beppe from Triancria Sicilian Cafe Bar organised a brilliant day, the focus of which was The Bishy Barkers Dog Show !!  I was all set to do a quick hour of photography to document some of the competition but once my high vis vest was on and the show got underway I found I was having too much fun and so was still taking snaps 6 hours later !!   Although there was the Crufts style Best in Show award, other categories were a bit more low key.  There were some strong contenders for the fancy dress category – we had it all from unicorns and bishops through to Princess Leia.  If pugs are your thing then you’re in for a treat!  Dogs also had the opportunity to showcase their tricks during their moment of glory in the ring.  There were some pretty impressive skills demonstrated!   The show rounded off with the announcement of the prize winners.  The grand finale saw the top 5 dogs back in the ring for a final judging with the decision made to name the very lovely Brodie as Best in Show!!

I’m known for my documentary photography so this was heaven for me.  Smiley happy people and their canine friends all set on having a really good day.  Perfect!

I thought I’d share some images to tell the story of the day.  Congratulations to all of the dog show winners and a huge thanks to everyone who features in the images.

Following some requests from dog owners I’ve created an online gallery where you can order prints from the dog show.  I’ll be donating 20% of all proceeds from print sales to the wonderful charity Keep Your Pet which was supported by the event.

The link will take you straight to the online gallery where all of the images taken on the day can be viewed:

One of my lovely photo buddies was there too – the very talented Anne-Marie King AKA The Phodographer – who was one of the judges.  They had a huge job with 50 entrants to judge!
