BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY FOR A CREATIVE BUSINESS

SILVER & STONE JEWELLERY DESIGN

I always adore branding photography commissions for creative businesses.  There is so much scope for documentary photography which sits so well alongside more styled set ups to showcase products and tools.  In these days of crowded digital platforms it is so important to make a strong first impression and also then tell a great story.  Photography plays a really important part in this process.  For an artist, maker or designer, images say so much about your style, your working environment, your creativity and processes.  It’s about taking your clients (existing and new) on a journey behind the scenes.

The branding shoot with Silver and Stone Jewellery Design is a perfect example of this approach.  Helen Drye works from a beautiful studio space in a rural setting outside York.  Helen works with PMC silver clay to create stunning pieces of jewellery.  Helen booked the shoot to support the launch of her latest collection which is inspired by nature and the setting of the Skipworth Common which sits next to her studio.  Within our half day shoot we included product images of the collection, branding portraits of Helen, flat lay set ups to show process and tools and finally some documentary images of Helen at work.  With a carefully planned shoot it’s so good how much can be achieved in the time.

Our first job of the day was to forage in the local woodland for props for the styled set ups.  Moss, fallen branches and skeleton leaves all made it onto the photography table.  I loved the contrast between the silver and vibrant greens.  We also found a beautiful piece of fallen silver birch which we also used as a set up for close in macro images of the pendants.  Earrings were styled very simply with some beautiful ceramics.  All of the pieces were photographed with soft window light and a macro lens.

For the final set of images of Helen at work in her studio I decided to edit with a gritty black and white finish.  This gives the images a timeless feel and focuses the eye to the process and storytelling element of the images.

Helen will be using the images to create large format boards for upcoming exhibitions and product launch events as well as to illustrate her website and social media profiles.  You can see her work and also find out about her workshops through the Silver and Stone Instagram account.  There are editorial ideas in the pipeline on the back of the shoot.  A great set of images always goes a long way to engage with press opportunities!

I’ve picked out some favourite images from the shoot to share.

I love working with creative businesses and have a specific portfolio titled ‘PRODUCERS & MAKERS‘.  This body of work covers off photography with artisan food producers, breweries and makers, designers and artists.
