Clifford’s Tower – Public Rally against English Heritage Visitor Centre plans
Public Rally against English Heritage Visitor Centre Plans
I went into photojournalist mode today to document the pubic rally against the English Heritage Clifford’s Tower visitor centre plans. The rally was organised by local independent York Councillor Johnny Hayes and featured a great line up of speakers who all spoke passionately about their opposition to the existing plans.
If this is a new issue for you then there is a bit of catching up to do! In a nutshell, York Council recently gave planning permission for English Heritage to build a visitor’s centre into the actual motte at the tower. Thousands of people have joined forces and signed a petition to voice their concerns. It is felt that a better location could be found and that perhaps it is time for the Council to review the entire Eye of York area with scope for a beautiful green space rather than ugly car park. There is an active crowd funding movement in place to raise funds to place a legal challenge to the planning decision. The crowdfunding website gives lots of information about the issues and concerns and so is well worth a visit – SAVE CLIFFORD’S TOWER CROWDFUNDING.
As a photographer I feel so strongly that we need to preserve the aesthetic of the motte. It is such an iconic landmark for York and I personally feel that the proposed plans would have a highly detrimental impact on the area.
