The Normans – Lillie & Zyen’s Wedding

I was so excited to part of this gorgeous celebration at super cool York wedding venue The Normans.  Lillie and Zyen had perfectly planned a fusion of styles and cultures that embraced both of their backgrounds.  The first section of the day focused traditional British civil ceremony in the twinkly barn.  The second half and many of the decorations and theming was about embracing cultural influences from Zyen’s Pakistani roots.

Lillie looked utterly stunning in her gown from La Novia bridal boutique in Edinburgh.  Her team of bridesmaids looked lovey in soft peppermint full length dresses.  Floristry on the day was by Wild Floral Couture  Alongside the opulent displays for the ceremony barn there was so much attention to detail with the flowers, including small displays at the pew ends and hanging baubles in the cow stalls.

The ceremony was so heartfelt and included an emotional reading by Lillie’s Mum.  I always love the atmosphere created in the ceremony barn with all of fairy lights and candles.  Black and white images suited this part of the day so much as they cut out background distraction and make the focus of each picture about the emotion between Lillie and Zyen as they made their vows to each other.

Everyone then gathered for drinks and canapes in the courtyard.  A lovely ambiance was created with live musicians playing traditional Pakistani bansuri (flute) and tabla (drum) music.  As always, formality was kept to a minimum with a handful of family groups at the barn doors.  My priority is always about giving the couple as much time as possible on the day to relax and enjoy the day but recognise how valuable family group portraits are as a mark in family history.  We also took a tiny bit of time away from the guests for some portraits of Lillie and Zyen in the lane adjacent to the venue just after the groups and a little later on in the drinks reception once the light had really mellowed out.

Catering on the day was by the fantastic team at F4D.  The canape boards looked so good and deserts were sharing style platters on little wooden benches.  The super twinkly marquee was full to the brim with colourful decorations and details.  Lillie had hand painted some gorgeous jars and vases to complement the flowers and tealight holders.  Speeches were held inbetween the different courses which worked really well.

As the early evening drew in, Lillie changed into a stunning bespoke outfit by Samsara Couture House, which is based in Lahore, Pakistan.  She looked so gorgeous and the soft evening light gave the perfect opportunity to capture some bridal portraits and outfit details.  Close friends and family members also changed with the girls wearing Lehenga Choli and the boys Shalwar kameez with vibrant scarves.  The evening’s proceedings kicked off with a traditional Pakistani entrance led by the girls holding mehndi plates and tealights.  Lillie is a passionate dancer and everyone was treated to an amazing performance that featured different groups of guests and of course Lillie and Zyen themselves.  Everyone involved had worked so hard with the rehearsals for the performance and it was just wonderful to watch and of course photograph!

Lillie and Zyen then took centre stage for their first dance which was so lovely.  Guests enjoyed an amazing party and I tiptoed off after capturing some dance floor shots and sense of the party.

It’s always so wonderful to receive thank you messages and this one really touched me.  Knowing that parents have really enjoyed both the images and the experience on the day means the world to me!  This was a lovely message I received after the wedding from Lillie’s Mum:

“I wanted to write to you to say a huge thank you for the beautiful photographs you produced for Lillie and Zyen’s wedding.  It was such a wonderful day.  As an adult you realise you have very few “perfect” days in life but we can confidently say that August 26th was one of our “perfect” days.  You captured the joyful feel of the event so beautifully, the vibrancy of the colours from flowers to clothing and the rainbow of guests who all came together to celebrate the wonderful relationship between Lillie and Zyen.  It is so amazing how you managed to capture so many wonderful moments without us even being aware of you in amongst the crowds.  Thank you, once again, for leaving us with such vibrant memories to last a lifetime”

So many congratulations again to you both!!  x
